Haiti is shaken!
The poorest–yet first– country in the Western Hemisphere to gain full independence from colonialsim, experienced an earth-shattering (literally) earthquake on Tuesday afternoon. The tremblor happended circa 16:43 while inhabitants on the island were unsuspecting of what devastation was portending.
However we hear, as most times we do following these tragic calamities that are beyond human comprehension and coping, that scientist predicted such a cataclysmic event could occur. At the 18th Caribbean Geological Conference that was held in May 2008–in Santo Domingo (the other half of the island that shared by Haiti)–scientist submitted papers that alleged that due to the positioning of extremely fault-sensitve fautlines that run almost criss-cross across Haiti and Santo Domingo, a big tremblor was in the making. However, subsequent to such imperative information being provided, advice was proffered to the Haitians–as it was to the abjectly poor blacks who resided in Lousiana when Hurricane Katrina was approaching–that they should prepare. Really? With what resources? Haiti is by far the most neglected of jewels that used to adorn the crown of colonialist crypt-keepers.
The inhabitants of Haiti and Santo Domingo need assistance now. For all of those who are wondering: “what should I do?”; “what can I do?”; “what must I do?”…or, for the apathetic, “should I do anything?”– get involved. There are a couple of organizations that are coordinating rescue efforts and endeavors to convey critical help and resources to the effected. Here is where others who want to help can. Now we know that in times of distress such as this, some individuals perceive these moments as get-rich-quick opportunities. As such, beware of organizations–or individuals for that matter–who solicit monies under the pretext of doing good; yet, good is only done to them.
The U.S. fund for UNICEF is a respected and reputable organization for donating money to. If you would like to assist, they can be reached at: 1-800-4UNICEF (1-800-486-4233). Also, they can be reached at: www.unicefusa.org/haitiquake.
Those rich western nations who are continually glibbing on about liberalism, yet, are the same ones that wax fat off of the backs of those still mired in the muck of misery that colonialism caused, now is your time to demonstrate what you say. Oh my, with all of the unneccesary invaluable resources being squandered in murderous theatres-of-war under the guise of liberation, those monies could be diverted to assist lives-like such in Haiti-than to extinguish them elsewhere as false beneficence. Put your money where your mouth is. Thanks to all.
